An 8-to-10-inch diameter bucket or decorative planter works beautifully to match your holiday porch theme. When you're shopping for your own, the most important thing is to make sure there are no drainage holes in the bottom. A container that stands about 10” tall is the perfect size for this project.

A little non-stick cooking spray works great on the inside of the bucket if you want to slide the concrete block out later. After the concrete dries, we use black spray paint on the entire bucket, inside and out, along with the PVC pipe to match. Choosing black allows the stand to cleanly recede into the background, keeping your eye moving straight to the yard sign as the true star of the show.
Give the inside of your plastic buckets or decorative planters a light coat of spray lubricant if you want to slide the concrete block out later. If you're keeping it in a permanent holiday planter, you can skip this step altogether.
Stir up your quick-setting concrete according to the package directions. Pour it evenly into your planters, leaving about two inches of breathing room at the top.
Pop your metal rods or ground stakes straight down into the middle of the wet concrete. Just make sure they line up exactly with the spacing on your custom wooden sign's mounting points.
Use a level to make sure your stakes are standing nice and straight. Let the concrete dry completely for 24 to 48 hours until it's rock-solid.
